9 años > Inglés > Lets celebrate

Hello! In this content, we are going to learn how to talk to talk about the weather, the seasons and to describe some on-going actions.

1- Vocabulary

1.1- The weather

This is John. He works on TV. He is a weather forecaster, which means he studies the weather conditions and tells people what the weather is likely to be.

John: Good morning, everyone. Here is the weather report for today:

As you can see, today we are having a cold, cloudy morning.

Luckily, it is not windy or snowy.

In the afternoon, we are having a beautiful sunny day.

Cold, but sunny.

Sadly, it´s raining and stormy  in the evening.

So, you should take an umbrella.

Tomorrow the sun is shining again and we are having a hot beautiful day.

1.3- Seasons

There are four seasons in a year.

A. Summer

Example: It is hot in summer.

Summer is from June to September *north of the Equator and from December to March south of the Equator.

* Equator is an imaginary line that divides the Earth in two parts, the north and the south.

For example, in Canada (north of the Equator) summer is in July; but in Chile (south of the Equator) summer is in January.

B. Fall or Autumn

Example: It is often cool and windy in Fall. The leaves of the trees are brown and they fall like in the picture above.

Fall is between Summer and Winter north of the Equator.

C. Winter

Example: It is cold in winter

Winter is from December to March north of the Equator and from June to September south of the Equator.

For example, in Canada (north of the Equator) winter is in January; but in Chile (south of the Equator) winter is in July.

D. Spring

Example: The weather is warm and nice in Spring

Spring is between Winter and Summer north of the Equator.

* Note that to talk about the Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter we use the preposition in. We say I go on holiday in Summer. I like going to the cinema in Winter.

1.4- Activity time

Below are the four seasons. Can you complete the missing names of the seasons? Remember Fall and Autumn are synonyms.

2- Grammar

2.1- The Present Continuous Tense

We use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about on-going actions, actions we are doing when we are speaking.

Let´s have a look at how to form it:

Affirmative:

Structure:

Subject + be (am – is- are) + verb with –ing (reading – listening – playing – jumping)

Example:

I am watching TV at the moment.

He is reading a book now.

They are playing computer games at the moment.

Interrogative:

Structure:

Be (am – is- are) + subject + verb with –ing (reading – listening – playing – jumping)?

Examples:

Are you listening to music now?

Is she doing her homework at the moment?

Negative:

Subject + be not (am not – is not – are not) + verb with –ing (reading – listening)

Example:

I am not reading a book at the moment.

He is not (isn´t) playing chess now.

They are not (aren´t) dancing in the garden at the moment.
